And life revives, and blossoms once again.
- Emily Pauline Johnson

I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.

What Is Art Therapy?
The Canadian Art Therapy Association:
Art therapy combines the creative process and psychotherapy, facilitating self-exploration and understanding. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of this creative therapeutic process, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate.
The American Art Therapy Association:
Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change.

"And life revives, and blossoms once again"
Emily Pauline Johnson
In her poem Fire-Flowers, the poet Emily Pauline Johnson describes a wildflower species native to the Canadian Rocky Mountains commonly referred to as Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium). Fireweed earned its name due to its rapid propagation in areas that have been devastated by forest fires or clear cutting. In addition to being nutritious and having anti-inflammatory properties, Fireweed also helps to rebuild a healthy ecosystem. These Fire-Flowers are often held as beautiful metaphors for the new life and healing that are possible after incredible hardship.
